2/28/2 - Dumping Russian Vodka, Why is beer not in plastic, & Hard Mountain Dew Rank(ed) #Vodka #StandwithUkraine #DumpVodka #Pravda #Molotov #Bottledbeer #why #hard #MountainDew #ranked #rank

Vodka is the latest target after Ukraine had an uninvited neighbor come across its borders. In a swift response, numerous stores, taverns, and bottle shops either pulled the stuff from shelves - or outright dumped it! Governors have banned Russian vodka, pulled it from state-run store shelves already. More are expected to follow suit. Not to be left behind - Ukrainian brewers, like Pravda (truth) Brewery started creating an “alternative” cocktail let's call it, temporarily suspending bottling their beer. If only we could supply all that grain alcohol to them for their rebottling program… For the dumping of the Russian vodka story click here https://www.thedailybeast.com/vodka-dumps-and-russian-booze-bans-sweep-north-america-to-protest-putin and for the Pravda Brewery story, click here https://www.euronews.com/culture/2022/02/27/ukrainian-brewery-in-lviv-appeals-on-social-media-for-molotov-cocktail-donations

Moving on to something a little lighter in the news, in fact, quite a bit lighter than the glass bottles mentioned above, why isn’t beer sold in plastic? Well, brewers have long said that it’s the preserve the beer, make sure it doesn’t oxygenate and spoil, make sure it’s not skunked by light passing through the plastic, and countless other reasons - but the real answer seems to be that it would cheapen the product. Sure other countries don’t seem to suffer any of the ill effects quoted as concerns. Sure plastic can hold pressure easily, plastic doesn’t shatter, is lighter weight, and can also be recycled (though to frequently isn’t) it really seems to come down to how it feels in the hand, and glass is the preferred choice to hold, followed by aluminum - either in bottle shapes or the more traditional can shape. Not everyone sees eye to eye on this though. Would you drink your beer out of a plastic bottle? Let me know and read more at https://wgntv.com/news/trending/why-isnt-beer-sold-in-plastic-bottles-like-soda/

Something we do often see in plastic bottles is Mountain Dew - though this version might not make it into them! Someone got all the formulations of the alcohol.. let’s say “Enhanced” versions of Hard Mountain Dew and did all the hard work for us. So what did they find of the 80-year-old brand? And can you believe Mountain Dew is 80, but they project such a youthful energy? For the full review - which by the way included sampling The Dew out of the finest glassware, head over to the link. I can’t bear to think o any of it as drinkable, I’m just not ready to cross that bridge yet, so head to https://brobible.com/culture/article/hard-mountain-dew-review/ if you want to find out if the original, watermelon, black cherry, or Baja Blast is crowned as the winner.. or if any of them were.

Next Time: Recording for the next Another Round, if all goes according to schedule it will come out the first Saturday in March!

2/25/22 - Diversity in Wine, Hop Burn in IPA, & Farm to Tap in Tennessee! #Wine #DEI #Diversity #HopBurn #IPA #BrewersAssociation #locallygrown #FarmtoTap #TN #Tennessee #Farmers #Local #FlannelFriday

While wines are enjoyed by people across the spectrum of countries and colors - representation in the industry is lacking. According to several sources, there are only 3 black Master Sommeliers in the world and 230+/- Sommelier total. For winery owners, the number is staggeringly low - only 1% of the wine & spirits industry in the US is represented. One couple hopes to change that though. As we near the end of Black history month, it’s good to have a story to share about Whitney and Chaz Gates - a couple who are looking to change that by giving a portion of their earnings to help bring more diversity to the industry. Whitney apparently got into Wine from an uncle who, was paralyzed but didn’t let that stop him from making his own wine. Whitney’s dreams took off from there. Her product WONDRY Cocktail Wines is described as a fruit-infused sangria collection with heightened alcohol content. It’s made in small batches and contains organic berries and exotic fruit extracts. She and her husband knew they were taking a chance on launching the product and now, they want to take a chance on other entrepreneurs. I hope they succeed in jumpstarting others' careers. If you’ve ever heard of hop burn, and complained about it before - you weren’t with the Brewers Association (officially) until recently. The new style guide calls out what has to be one of the biggest issues with modern brewers (I wonder if they called out exploding cans too? Brewers with that issue have yet to be reprimanded that I’m aware of). Anyway - hop burn is a horrible thing to happen to a beer and to your palate. What is hop burn? It’s described as an intensely astringent, drying, corrosive sensation. Hop burn is believed to be caused by excessive contact time between the hops and the beer. As dry-hopping volumes and the number of sessions have increased- so has hop burn. If you want to learn more about hop burn, what causes it, and what’s being done about it - head to the link https://www.pastemagazine.com/drink/craft-beer/hazy-ipa-hop-burn-cause-texture-flavor-brewers-association-style-guidelines/

And Knoxville Tennessee having a great time imbibing this weekend. Not the way you might expect, it’s with a “Farm To Tap Festival”. The Tennessee Craft Brewers Guild is behind the effort to use locally grown ingredients in their local beers - something that’s definitely been catching on in many states, and I’m here for it! It’s actually the first of three events, if you miss this one it’s happening again and in different locations too. The next one is March 12 in Nashville, and the last one scheduled is April 16th in Memphis. Props to them for not calling it “The First Annual” by the way. Link to the event info here https://www.wate.com/news/local-news/farm-to-tap-festival-encourages-knoxville-to-drink-local/

Next Time: I’m snowed in - hope I have enough beer, cider, wine, and spirits to make it!

2/24/22 - Dogfish Head Whiskey, Wine diversity in pop culture, & Hill Farmstead Edward in VT is King #DogfishHead #Whiskey #Wine #TV #Popculture #HillFarmstead #vtbeer #vtcraftbeer #ShaunHill

Brought to you by The Real Voice - Mel Allen. Providing voice over for commercials, podcasts, explainer videos, and more. Samples and demos at https://therealvoice.com

Dogfish Head has another spirits release out. The 90-proof “Alternate Takes Volume 3: Whiskey Finished in Apple Brandy & Apple Cider Barrels” is distilled from 100% pale malt and finished for 36-plus months in freshly-emptied Dogfish Head American oak apple brandy barrels and French oak apple cider barrels from Angry Orchard (so definitely some of that sharing we expected with the Boston Beer merger). It’s on shelves in Delaware, Maryland, and DC. It’s headed to New Jersey and Washington. Later this spring you can also expect to find them on shelves across New York. As this one works its way onto shelves, more Dogfish head spirits are expected to go into distribution too. https://craftspiritsmag.com/2022/02/24/dogfish-head-debuts-new-whiskey-expands-distribution-of-full-proof-spirits-to-new-york/

Wine's portrayal on TV is changing - which is a good thing considering today’s wine drinkers, makers, and influencers are a pretty diverse group of individuals. The wine space is evolving in pop culture too on shows like; NBC’s “Grand Crew,” Hulu’s “Promised Land,” and OWN’s “The Kings of Napa”. The shows may not be a great place to go for wine education and information - but hey - you take a W where you can. The shows are all running now and hopefully if nothing else - it’ll be good to see people making and enjoying wine, perhaps fighting and getting all dramatic over it too, who look a lot more like today’s audience. https://vinepair.com/articles/wine-tv-shows-diversity-inclusion/

One thing’s for sure - Hill Farmstead’s Edward is popular in Vermont - but there are other beers here too. Don’t forget that this is the region that also created The Alchemist's Heady Topper (though I prefer Focal Banger more - ssshhhhh). It’s tough living in a place that’s been called the home of the best beers in the world. OK, only when I travel to a place with a lot of less than stellar beers (which thankfully is becoming harder). Lots of places I’ve made regular stops at crown Shaun Hill and company as the King of the land though including feedback from Three Penny Taproom, Kingdom Taproom, Blackback Pub (try their house nachos - they will blow you away), and the Worthy group (made up of Worthy Burger, Worthy Kitchen, and Worthy Burger Too). https://www.burlingtonfreepress.com/story/life/2022/02/23/vermont-beer-bars-most-popular-brews-vt/9175220002/

2/23/22 - US Treasury helping Craft, Whisky Lemonade RTD, Review the Top Beer Styles of '21 #Treasury #Craftbrewers #shipping #Spring #Summer #RTD #Cocktail #whisky #Lemonade #Top10 #topbeers

I quickly wanted to say that I missed everyone Monday and Tuesday. I was in Boston and ended up in a taproom around the time I would normally record. I had hoped to record live on location, but it was far too loud to try and go that route, so I just enjoyed some beverages!

Brought to you by The Real Voice - Mel Allen. Providing voice over for commercials, podcasts, explainer videos, and more. Samples and demos at https://therealvoice.com

Help for the craft beer industry is coming from an unlikely place - the US Government. Specifically - the Treasury wants to give beer lovers more choices than “the usual suspect” and help shake their grip of 65% of the US beer market. The answers could include everything from rethinking how beers are displayed on grocery store shelves to considering whether brews can be shipped straight to doorsteps. The Treasury Department came up with its list of suggestions in a 64-page report as part of a plan to improve small business access to the beer, wine, and spirits industry. Part of what they’re looking at is how state alcohol laws impact competition for smaller brewers, how mergers affect smaller companies, and how the labeling laws may be making it difficult to comply with laws. Look for rule changes to be announced in the next coming months. One thing that’s being pushed to open up sooner than later - shipping beer directly!. Crown Royal has a new spring and summer entry for the Ready-to-drink cocktail market. Whisky Lemonade (which is what I already make as a summer sipper) will be joining Whisky & Cola, Washington Apple, and Peach Tea on store shelves. The new flavor is so bold it can turn parties onto block parties, BBQs into neighborhood feasts and is the perfect choice to enjoy with family and friends… according to the press release. So use all that power carefully and responsibly. And as I was checking in beers on my jaunt to Boston I saw a list of the top 10 styles on 2021 and, yup, Pilsner is on it. Not shocking anyone - IPA’s (from American, New England, Hazy, Sessions, and Double) held several top spots - but it’s good to see that Fruited Sours, Belgian Triple, and Stouts also held their own too. For the full list - and beers that made up some of those entries in the top 10 - head to https://untappd.com/blog/the-top-10-styles-of-2021/1390

2/18/22 - New York State Brewers Conference, Minnesota Land of Lagers? & an RTD or Seltzer? Yes! #FlannelFriday NYS #BA #BrewersAssociation #Minnesota #Lager #Seltzer #RTD #Cocktail #cans #SESH

Brought to you by The Real Voice - Mel Allen. Providing voice over for commercials, podcasts, explainer videos, and more. Samples and demos at https://therealvoice.com

Yesterday I talked about DEI - New Yorkers brewers are going to learn more about it soon as one of the keynote speakers at an upcoming event. Dr. J Jackson-Beckham, an expert in the field, leads the BA's Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) department as the association’s Equity & Inclusion Partner, will be speaking at the New York State Brewers Conference coming up March 9 - 12 in Albany, NY. Dogfish Head founder Sam Caliglione is set to be the other keynote speaker at the event which will also showcase NYS suppliers of malts & hops. Of course, there’s a competition too with 29 style categories, the best NYS Beer, and the coveted Governor's Cup. Get all the details at https://www.nyscbc.com/

When you think of where most lagers come from ten years ago - you wouldn’t be wrong to immediately think of a big multinational company pumping the stuff out of factories. Lately, though, it’s coming from craft beer producers and the drinkers who are learning they actually love the flexibility, flavors, and depth of styles. Personally - I lean toward the malty, dark, and flavorful ones - just as I do with ales. Though Yes, I’ve been known to have an IPA or two. Well, Minnesota is being hailed, or maybe politely suggested, as the land of 10,000 lagers according to the Star Tribune who recently ran a story on the beers. One thing’s for sure in the story - lagers are worth seeking out. Check out the scoop at https://www.startribune.com/is-minnesota-the-land-of-10000-lagers-grain-belt-fair-state-indeed-utepils-earth-rider-tin-whiskers/600142359

And is it an RTD cocktail or a seltzer? Well. Yes. Apparently, SESH is a better-for-you cocktail meets seltzer in a can and its line is expanding. How are they seltzers, RTDs, and also better for you? SESH drinks have all-natural ingredients, no sugar, and combe the robust flavor of cocktails with that better-for-you format of seltzers. Coming in March you’ll be able to find a Spicy Mango Margarita, Whiskey Soda, Whiskey Ginger, and Mimosa in a can. That’s in addition to the current Mojito, Gin & Tonic, Paloma, and Moscow Mule offerings. Along with their lineup - their distribution is expanding too. They’ve been available in Illinois, New Jersey, New York, and Ohio for some time. The expansion will now include Florida, Georgia, Maryland, Massachusetts, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Tennessee. You may also be able to order SESH online at DrinkSesh.com. All the details on the lineup at https://www.brewbound.com/news/sesh-by-xed-beverage-company-yields-significant-expansion-for-year-two/

2/17/22 - Wine Grapes are Superfood, Beer Inclusion Project, Guinness giving away prizes! #marc #chardonnay #grapes #superfood #chocolate #DEI #Beer Inclusion #Guinness #cash #prizes #win #StPattysDay

Brought to you by The Real Voice - Mel Allen. Providing voice over for commercials, podcasts, explainer videos, and more. Samples and demos at https://therealvoice.com

What do you do with leftover grapes? A group of scientists and entrepreneurs have one idea - turn them info superfood and enrobe it in chocolate! According to the President of Vine to Bar, leftovers from pressing grapes for winemaking makes 10 billion pounds of waste a year globally — in California alone, that’s about 830,000 pounds! The transformation to a would-be superfood took more than 10 years and $10 Million bucks (including a USDA grant)! They have the former head of global innovation from Mars Inc. as their chocolatier - so maybe Vine to Bar knows what’s up here. The Chardonnay marc - leftover grapes - includes probiotics and prebiotics, so it’s good for your gut too! Find out what’s up at https://nypost.com/2022/02/14/discarded-grapes-from-white-wine-production-being-turned-into-chocolate-superfood/

DEI is something people have heard much more about since a couple of notable lawsuits and Craft Beer’s #MeToo movement. But what is DEI and is it helping? While that remains It stands for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and, to be frank, it’s hard to measure exactly how it’s going. What we can say is some brewers initially (by their own admission) earned an “F” a few years ago and now rate themselves much better - but still only getting a “C” grade. So there’s more to do. What we do know is it’s been in the spotlight and it’s probably going to be thrust back in again and again. Around the same time the DEI segment launched - so did “The Inclusion Beer Project” and its aim is to get breweries to agree to increase DEI. Get the full story and links to The Beer Inclusion Project and other great resources like Beer Kulture, the Black is Beautiful initiative, and more at https://www.berkeleyside.org/2022/02/03/inclusion-beer-project-diversity-goals-breweries

As we continue moving toward St Patrick’s Day, Guinness has helped jumpstart everyone’s awareness with the announcement that they’ll be doling out $1 Million Dollars in prizes with $50,000 in cash prizes to 20 different winners! To enter, you need to be 21+. If you are, go to Toast.Guinness.com, make sure you read the rules and can play, and then upload a 30-second video before March 31! See their site for all the legal details and keep your eyes peeled in NYC, Boston, Chicago for Guinness in parties and parades. They apparently may also launch some hot air balloons in select locations. It sounds like everyone’s excited about this St Patty’s Day (I know I am)! 2/16/22 - Massachusetts Beer Week, St Patricks Day Planning, To Go Cocktails in Rhode Island #MassBeerWeek #Massachusetts #StPatricksDay #StPattysDay #togococktails #cocktails #RI #RhodeIsland #NEbeer

Brought to you by The Real Voice - Mel Allen. Providing voice over for commercials, podcasts, explainer videos, and more. Samples and demos at https://therealvoice.com

Mass is a body of coherent matter, usually of indefinite shape and often of considerable size - well that’s one way to define Mass Beer Week! And we’re mere days (ok maybe two+ weeks) away from the beginning of it! #MASSBEERWEEK returns to celebrate local craft beer on March 5-12, 2022. They’re selling t-shirts and have a whole calendar of events too. The events include several panel discussions, trivia, beer and cheese pairings, and even a photo contest. All you gotta do is take a good pic, use the #MassBeerWeek hashtag and tag @massbeerweek on social media to get entered. Get ready and get your planning started at https://massbrewersguild.org/massbeerweek

We’re also almost a month away from Saint Patrick’s Day! It’s when “Irish upon a star”, and it’s the unofficial kick-off to my birthday celebrations, so I’ve always held the holiday near and dear to my heart. Lots of cities are having celebrations, so I’ll let you check your local sites and breweries and fine drinking establishments to see if they’re joining in the fray. But, for those wishing to pregame or try some Irish Yoga in the privacy of their own home or the home of a friend - here’s a list of Irish Cocktails and how to make them for all your Saint Patrick’s Day Festivities. They’re not all green, and some are suspiciously not Irish sounding, but they sure might help you get your Irish on. Do you know I hear some people sing when they’re completely sober? News to me too! The recipes are at https://www.cosmopolitan.com/food-cocktails/g38584301/irish-cocktail-recipes-for-st-patricks-day/

And things are looking good for another state to allow to go cocktails to become permanent. This time the bill is sitting on the governor’s desk in Rhode Island and, he’s shown support for it in the past, so odds are looking good it will be signed. Politics is weird though - so no guarantees until he does put pen to paper. The more this happens, the more pressure is put on neighboring states for this good move that will help restaurants as they continue to pivot and deal with staffing issues. Now, obviously, we want everyone to adhere to the law and be responsible about their intake - so I’m not in support of gallons of the stuff going to one address - but no one’s advocating for that, that I know of, so I think we’re safe there! Get the details at the link. Hopefully, by the time you click on it, the story will be updated to say say it’s been signed! https://www.newportri.com/story/lifestyle/food/2022/02/16/newport-ri-food-scene-cocktails-go-good-restaurants/6810869001/

2/15/22 - High End Boxed wine, Beers back from the dead, and RTD's creating confusion! #boxedwine #wine #zombie #zombeer #reborn #reboot #RTD #seltzer #confusion #shopping

Brought to you by The Real Voice - Mel Allen. Providing voice over for commercials, podcasts, explainer videos, and more. Samples and demos at https://therealvoice.com

Wine in a box has that opposite of Je ne said quoi - that air of affordability about them. Until now that is. It’s been rare to find a boxed wine out of the teens Occasionally there have been some in the $35 range - but the bubble has officially been burst! Tablas Creek Vineyard is pushing the envelope. Will it push back? That remains to be seen - but they’re busy folding up boxes that will set you back $95 for the 3-liter package. It might be good timing as boxed wine sales have been up - nearly 19% last year - when compared to 2019. Find out more about the 108 cases of Patelin Rose and why it’s living in a box at https://www.wine-searcher.com/m/2022/02/dawn-of-the-95-wine-box

Everybody likes a comeback kid, right? Well, there are ten beer companies, most of which I’ve heard of most and actually tried seven of that came back from the dead. Thankfully - this isn’t like that Zombie dream, it’s just that the brands were too beloved to let them lie. Narragansett, Catamount, and even Pabst Blue Ribbon are on this list - among others - so prepare for some nostalgia as you peruse this list. https://www.eatthis.com/discontinued-beers-returned/

And why aren’t beer alternatives growing faster - according to the research - it’s shopper confusion. 71% of people who walk up to these products spend time walking back and forth to see which one might be right… but end up walking away! RTD, Seltzers, and other “Beyond beer” products (as they’re called in this article). Turns out more men are walking away - and we might have better data, better signage, and more helpful information on cans to help us consumers make better choices. Who doesn’t love making good choices in the aisle - so you can go enjoy what you’re buying!? Check out the story at https://www.csnews.com/shopper-confusion-hurting-sales-beyond-beer-category

2/1422 Ep 96 - Texas Craft Brewers Cup, Blue Run Spirits, NA beer code cracked!#Medals #Medalwinner #FredMinnick #awardwinning #spirits #whiskey #whisky # NABeer #terpenes #terpenoids

Congratulations to all those who brought gold, silver, and bronze medals home - no I’m not talking about the Olympics - I’m talking about the Texas Craft Brewers Cup. Don’t get me started that they called it the first annual because, until it happens again next year - is there any way of knowing it might be the last annual too? Anyway - 81 medals were given to 57 small and independent brewers across the state out of 131 breweries that entered. That amounts to 27 medal categories covering 150+ different beer styles that were awarded gold, silver, and bronze medals. They had a tough job anonymizing 755 entries to make sure only a select few knew what anyone was even judging! For the full list head to https://www.craftbrewingbusiness.com/business-marketing/here-are-the-winners-of-first-annual-texas-craft-brewers-cup/

Blue Run Spirits is making a splash in the glass of the whiskey world. First - they picked up former Four Roses master distiller Jim Rutledge. That went off with a bang as the “liquid advisor” helped them sell out of some releases in minutes and win the 2021 San Francisco World Spirits Competition! Since then they have also added “the Buddha of Bourbon” protege of Wild Turkey master distillers Jimmy Russell, son, Eddie Russell. They’ve also named Blue Run’s first whiskey director - Shaylyn Gammon of Louisville - to help expand the brand’s portfolio. She created the Russell’s Reserve 13-year-old Bourbon, which was named the Best American Whiskey of 2021 by Fred Minnick. I don’t know what’s in the water - but apparently there’s magic in the whisky there! They’re expanding their reach too with 10,000 bottles now available in 14 states and across three countries. The full story at https://www.kentucky.com/lexgoeat/bourbon/article258165858.html

The code has been cracked! For years the issue has been that NA beers have been a bit lackluster. While some seem to have cracked the code their own way (like Athletic Brewing and Zero Gravity) researchers at the University of Copenhagen say "What non-alcoholic beer lacks is the aroma from hops. When you remove the alcohol from the beer, for example by heating it up, you also kill the aroma that comes from hops. Other methods for making alcohol-free beer by minimizing fermentation also lead to poor aroma because alcohol is needed for hops to pass their unique flavor to the beer.” Small molecules called monoterpenoids seem to be the reason and the process the researchers found should also allow more flavorful NA beers to be made with a much les energy intensive process - saving brewers big bucks! The method is already being tested in breweries in Denmark and the plan is to have the technique ready for the entire brewing industry in October 2022. Get the full story at https://phys.org/news/2022-02-non-alcoholic-beer-regular.html

2/11/22 - Snacks & Beer Pairing, Scotch & Chocolate, Cookies & Beer, Maine Beer Co. Gifts USM #GirlScoutCookies #pairing #Snacks #beer #Superbowl #Valentine #scotch #chocolate #USM #MaineBeerCompany

Brought to you by The Real Voice - Mel Allen. Providing voice over for commercials, podcasts, explainer videos, and more. Samples and demos at https://therealvoice.com

I tweeted at Pints and Panels today to see if there were any Girl Scout Cookie and Beer Pairings to recommend - and it’s coming in March! I’ll do my best to keep you informed as my cookies just dropped and I might try some pairings as I have heard Samoas pair well with a Brown Ale, S'mores with a Peanut Butter Chocolate Stout, and Shortbread aka Trefoil with Sours or Pale Ales - but I have not tried myself yet. If you have some good pairings, let me know on Twitter https://twitter.com/The_Boozebuddy

Anyway - on to the stories - which prompted this pairing to begin with! Snacks are good, beer is good - but some complement each other really well. So get your game face on for this weekend and if you don’t have good recipes yet for your Super party get things moving. From Pretzels, Spinach dip, and wings to Maibock, Stouts, and Saisons it’s going to help you really enjoy the day - whether or not your team pulls through or isn’t in the game. https://food52.com/blog/15710-10-beer-and-food-pairings-for-the-big-game

The next one is a bit of a Valentine’s pairing, but for those who just aren’t into the wines. This one is for the Scotch and chocolate lovers - a wonderful level of indulgence that makes my mouth water just thinking about it! This is a bit of an old list - but I couldn’t find one that went across several brands and types that was updated and, honestly, this one just seems like it’s so much more of a complete list. Head over to et the run down https://scotchwhisky.com/magazine/food/18340/10-ways-to-pair-chocolate-with-whisky/

And now for something completely different - The University of Southern Maine (USM) Foundation has received a $100,000 gift from Maine Beer Company to create a unique Brewing Up Opportunity Internship & Scholarship Fund. The gift establishes a pilot program for USM students that includes a paid internship with Maine Beer Company and a scholarship award of up to $5,000 per academic year upon completion of the internship. The program’s goal is to promote diversity and inclusion within the craft beverage industry by providing access to education, on-the-job training, and mentoring to help develop a new generation of beer industry professionals. That’s verbatim from the press release you can read at https://usm.maine.edu/publicaffairs/maine-beer-company-gift-creates-brewing-opportunity-program-usm

Next Time: Tomorrow we’ll go Another Round with the Eco-Friendly Beer Drinker - make sure to tune in! I also release the Another Round editions earlier than the weekday editions!

2/10/22 - Instacart's Top Beers and Snacks, Make Ahead Cocktails for Valentine's Day, Drinking across Colorado #Instacart #superbowl #snacks #beer #cocktails #makeahead #colorado #breweries #taprooms

Brought to you by The Real Voice - Mel Allen. Providing voice over for commercials, podcasts, explainer videos, and more. Samples and demos at https://therealvoice.com

The one thing about a Super Weekend with the NFL is that we’ll have some big arguments about snacks, teams, and beer! Instacart isn’t focusing on the teams playing - but they have the beers and snacks people order the most for the Super Bowl. I wasn’t surprised at all by many on the list - but the number one beer spot was Modelo Especial! That was definitely the underdog from my personal picks - but it’s a beer I’d drink any day of the week! Get the list of top snacks, dips, and more at The Snacktime Report https://www.instacart.com/company/updates/the-snacktime-report-here-for-the-snacks/

Here’s a way to say I Love you for Valentine’s Day, Birthdays, or really any big day - make ahead freezer cocktails! I haven’t done this before, but I can tell you I’m going to start now. Who wouldn’t want to reach into the freezer and pull out a perfectly chilled and ready-to-drink Martini, Negroni, Old-Fashioned, or (perhaps appropriately for this weekend and Monday) a Flame of Love? Several recipes, and the proper storage, shared by experts are included that can save your day or make the day. Do it now while you’re thinking about it - and surprise your significant other. I’m going to go do it with a Milk and Honey & Kahlua recipe my wife loves. The link is at https://punchdrink.com/articles/make-your-freezer-cocktail-work-harder-death-co/

And this guy might be my hero as I’ve wanted to do this for a long time, but responsibilities… anyway - Paul MyHill went through the state of Colorado to drink through 467 breweries, brewpubs, taproom, and more. How long did it take him? A decade? 5 years? No - it took him 18 months! It started out, as many of these things do, going out for a round with a friend. Before he knew it he had a challenge of 30 breweries in 30 days, 100 in 100 days, and.. well you get the picture! Not only did he hit all those places in the state, but tracked stops at 150 places outside of the state while on vacations during that time! Get the full details - including the most unusual beer he drank at https://www.denverpost.com/2022/02/04/paul-myhill-colorado-beer-guy/

2/9/22 - White Claw Passion Fruit, Valentine's Wine and Chocolate Pairing, Britain's Oldest Pub Closing #WhiteClaw #passionFruit #ValentinesDay #Wine #chocolate #pairing #Pub #YeOldeFightingCocks

First, allow me to apologize for some errant (bad) shortened links on some earlier stories. I’ll be updating them at BoozebuddyUpdate.com and in the show notes over the next few days.

Brought to you by The Real Voice - Mel Allen. Providing voice over for commercials, podcasts, explainer videos, and more. Samples and demos at https://therealvoice.com

White Claw has a new flavor - but apparently, Jessica told everyone before they got the chance to. Thanks Jessica. No, really, thank you. The new flavor is Passion Fruit and, according to the press release, “The newest White Claw® Hard Seltzer flavor delivers a clean, balanced, and refreshing taste of sweetness and right amount of tartness that’s found in the popular tropical fruit,”. Like other White Claw flavors, the Passion Fruit edition is gluten-free, 100 calories and 5% ABV. The pack was set to hit shelves in Mid-February, except for a few locations that released it to Jessica and other White Claw drinkers a little early. (Hey new stockers working at Publix - you’re supposed to rotate the new stuff behind the older stuff). Get the details here https://vinepair.com/booze-news/new-white-claw-flavor-passion-fruit/

Valentine’s Day is coming up - so I’ll probably do a few more stories as we get closer just to give you last-minute folks who haven’t yet realized the big game on Sunday the 13th might run afoul of Valentine’s Day plans for the 14th - unless you plan early with a spread of chocolate and wine pairings! Cupid’s Culinary Coupling as it's called in the article - helps you know what wine pairs well with milk chocolate, dark chocolate, and even that stuff that dares to call itself chocolate - but isn’t - yes white chocolate I’m talking to you! And this list runs everywhere from Gewurtztraminer to Moscato d’Asti to Malbec to Zinfandel and everything in between. Get to picking this up and salvaging your valentine’s day! https://qctimes.com/community/bettendorf/bettendorf-magazine-chocolate-and-wine---cupid-s-culinary-coupling/article_3860d734-89bb-11ec-bc2c-e3ce6e2212d5.html

Britain's oldest pub closes after 1,229 years. The Ye Olde Fighting Cocks pub in St. Albans, England, announced on Facebook that it was closing permanently after financial problems were made worse by the COVID-19 pandemic. The pub's website states the business first started pouring drinks in the year 793. the pub's financial problems predated the pandemic, but issues continually worsened until the team determined it no longer would be able to meet financial obligations. Mitchells & Butlers, the brewery that owns the building, said the pub could potentially reopen. https://www.upi.com/Odd_News/2022/02/08/oldest-pub-closing-1229-years-Ye-Olde-Fighting-Cocks/9761644347053/

2/8/22 - Valentines cocktails, NFL Rams, and Earthlylabs C02 capture #Valentines #recipes #cocktails #NFL #Rams #LosCarneros #c02 #c02capture #earthlylabs #brewing #technology

Brought to you by The Real Voice - Mel Allen. Providing voice over for commercials, podcasts, explainer videos, and more. Samples and demos at https://therealvoice.com

Valentine’s Day is coming and Cosmopolitan.com has six recipes they’ve put together for you. Before you ask, yes, the first recipe is for a Cosmopolitan. The best part - they’re all relatively simple recipes with only 5 or 6 ingredients and, they all look pinkish-reddish… with the exception of the Chocolate Espresso Martini that is (which sounds delicious). So grab your shaker, head over to your local bottle supplier and get the recipes for your magical weekend, or night - however you celebrate - at https://www.cosmopolitan.com/uk/worklife/g38899350/valentines-day-cocktails/

When you think of a beverage to go with the NFL and football in general - you probably think of macro beer. Well, not the Rams. They’re partnering with Los Angeles-based winemaker Malek Amrani to come out with Los Carneros - literally ‘the Rams’ but it’s also a place in Sonoma and Napa counties in California. The area is mainly known for pinot noir and chardonnay wines. Amrani says though, “Batch #52 reflects the potential of Los Carneros cabernet sauvignon, the underdog of Napa Valley, to achieve a breakthrough in a region where cabernet reigns king.” It’s been aged for 22 months in two new medium toast oak barrels; one French and one American. A limited run of 600 bottles was made and it's retailing for ~$69. Get the link to the wine shop and the story on the wine at https://newsopener.com/food-drinks/limited-edition-cab-celebrates-the-la-rams-cheers/

Tip of the hat to an upcoming The Boozebuddy Update: Another Round guest for sharing this story - Earthlylabs has another CO2 capture device in a big brewery. Normally breweries have vented the C02 and then pay to pump it into their brew later - but this lab is making a product that can go into big breweries and even small breweries to help capture and reuse the stuff that’s made in the beer-making process. It’s not in use at the Alchemist in Vermont, Austin Beerworks in Texas, and now Treehouse Brewing in Massachusetts (among others?) Check out this tweet for the scoop https://twitter.com/treehousebrewco/status/1488897092244365316 and check out Earthlylabs solutions for breweries at https://earthlylabs.com/solutions/brewing-solutions/

2/7/22 - Berkshire Mountain Distillers, Captain Morgan's Punch Bowl, Schwarzbier #CraftBrewersWhiskeyProject #CaptainMorgan #SuperBowlPunchBowl #Schwarzbier #MattyBenedetto #UnnecessaryInventions

Monday February 7 2022

Brought to you by The Real Voice - Mel Allen. Providing voice over for commercials, podcasts, explainer videos, and more. Samples and demos at https://therealvoice.com

Berkshire Mountain Distillers latest #CraftBrewersWhiskeyProject release is out and ready for tasting! Each addition to the American whiskey collection is the product of a single-sourced craft brew distilled into a unique Berkshire Mountain Distillers whiskey. This time around it’s Long Trail's Unearthed Stout, Chatham Brewing's 8 Barrel Ale, and 2RoadsBrewing's Workers Comp Farmhouse Ale. They’ve been distilled and aged in barrels for 4 - 5 years. If that wasn’t cool enough - and to me, it seems pretty damn cool - their Distiller, Michael Sharry, is in a battle. He’s a contestant on “Moonshiners: Master Distiller” and you can see him on February 23rd, on the Discovery Channel, as he battles for the title of Master Distiller! For the full details, head to https://craftbrewerswhiskeyproject.com/ and make sure to follow them on social media

Are Uneccesary inventions useless? Maybe not! Captain Morgan came up with an invention that honestly seems kind of awesome. It’s called the Captain Morgan Super Bowl Punch Bowl and it stirs with the sound waves created by the Bluetooth speaker at the base of the bowl, keeps track of the score during the game, and holds 4 gallons of whatever punch you want to throw in it! Matty Benedetto of Unnecessary Inventions even pops up halfway through the commercial for the bowl - head to https://punchbowl.captainmorgan.com/en/gate and for the full punch bowl of info on this head to Seven Days https://www.sevendaysvt.com/vermont/captain-morgan-and-burlingtons-matty-benedetto-stir-the-super-bowl-party-action/Content?oid=34825383

OK, on to beer - and a fantastic beer at that - I’m lucky enough to live near Queen City Brewery in Burlington, and they make great classic German and European beers. I recently went in for some Schwarzbier aka Black Lager, aka Malta (and also Gregarious, their Scotch Ale) and it’s so good it’s no wonder it’s continuing to trend. It’s one of those dark and mysterious beers a lot of people think “I can’t drink that!” and yet it is so easy to drink! If you drink more than the cheapest light lagers or hoppiest of hazy bois - then you might really enjoy this. Try it anyway - and let me know what you think. Then you'll understand why interest in beer has grown 400% in the past two years. Find out about Queen City at http://queencitybrewery.com/. 2/4/22 - Ep 88 - Wines & Snacks w/ the big game, Blue beer w/ algae, Is Happy Hour good for business #HappyHour #Opinion #Wines #football #superbowl #biggame #snacks #Algae #blue #beer

Brought to you by The Real Voice - Mel Allen. Providing voice over for commercials, podcasts, explainer videos, and more. Samples and demos at https://therealvoice.com

If you haven’t heard, there’s some sort of Bowl coming up, I’ve heard it’s a Super one too! Well, if you want to have some fried snacks and cheap beer - you might be in the majority - but what if you want to have some snacks that pair well with wine? Forbes has your answer, with wines that pair well with Chips and Dips, Buffalo wings, BBQ, Loaded Potato Skins, and even Nachos! Yeah - now I want all the snacks and wines - and it’s not even the big game yet! Get the Super story and fill up your bowl, or glass at the link in the show notes shorturl.at/zQT49

Whatever you serve up when the game is on - will it be blue (and I don’t mean Labatt)? A French brewer has started using spiraling algae, that contains a naturally-occurring pigment, and it turns the beer blue. The beer, called "Line", is a kind of collaborative/meeting of the minds of a dietary supplement maker and a nearby craft brewery, Hoppy Urban Brew, who wanted to make their beverages stand out. According to Sebastien Verbeke, an employee "It's getting an enormous amount of interest and curiosity on the part of the public”. I bet it is! Honestly, I wouldn’t be against trying it - but glad I wasn’t the tester on one of the first test batches. I wonder if we’ll have any brewers making it in the states anytime soon. shorturl.at/ouKV7

I live in one of several states with no happy hour and I’m OK with it - turns out Massachusetts and Rhode Island haven’t had one since the mid-1980s. It was done to help curb driving under the influence in many states. Well now - lawmakers in RI and Mass want to reverse the laws - they say to help businesses… but apparently, the word is that Happy Hours don’t often help businesses - people find a place that has the best deal, have one or two drinks and then leave. Honestly - I’ve seen this myself. Places here can have a beer special - but it has to be all day. People go to the place with the cheapest price, have a few, and then head out.  What’s your opinion on it? Check out the link and leave your feedback on this video or at The Boozebuddy Update. Do Happy Hours bring in more business, or do people just bounce from place to place looking for a cheap drink? shorturl.at/irBDO

Brought to you by The Real Voice - Mel Allen. Providing voice over for commercials, podcasts, explainer videos, and more. Samples and demos at https://therealvoice.com

I love a good CollaBEERation and hearing that Our Mutual Friend Brewing is set to release three new collaboration beers this month.

“Fate Map” is a collaboration with Attitude Brewing out of San Diego. The 7.6% ABV IPA utilizes a combination of West Coast and Juicy/Hazy techniques. “Greatness is Transitory”, is a collaboration with Station 26 Brewing Co., it’s a Barrel-Fermented Wild India Pale Ale. For “Yellow Vibrations”, they collaborated with Perennial Artisan Ales out of St. Louis. Yellow is a Saison that’s brewed with buckwheat and wildflower honey and comes in at 5.8% ABV. 2/2/22 Ep 86 - Vermont Beer Scene changes, Teremana Tequila, and Cidrerie Lacroix #vt #vtbeer #vtcraftbeer #MillRiver #14thStar #backacrebeer #Collaborative #brewing #tequila #hardcider #roadtrip

There’s been some good news and bad news in the Vermont scene. First, the bad so we can savor the good later. Backache beer and Collaborative brewing are no longer in business in Vermont. But, the story may not be over. Collaborative seems to have been misplaced, or displaced - basically, they’re without a home. You can still find the product they’ve already put out into the world for a while longer, but they ended their message on their closing with this line “Our hearts are heavy now that it’s coming to an end, and optimistic for what all our awesome minds will do next” which seems to make it sound like the chapter has ended, but there’s more to come in their story. Let’s hope. The other is Backacre who started in Denver, came to Vermont, and now are going back to Denver. Their story isn’t over - but the beer might be a bit harder to get your hands on - though it was always a bit of a challenge. It sounds like relationships they’ve built here will keep their product on shelves for some time. So again - the story isn’t over. The good news is that 14th Star in St Albans is growing and changing. If you’ve been to their taproom in the past - expect to see some big changes there soon, and new beer lines as they celebrate 10 years! It looks like everything at 14th Star is getting a refresh though - including can designs. Mill River Brewing is also growing - they’ll be adding a new taproom, with some table service, to focus more on the beer as they’ve been split between brews and BBQs. While the restaurant toed the line between a brewpub and restaurant - they will allow them to make some separation - that will probably benefit both sides of the business. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson just got his Red Notice.. or maybe it was a green notice as his Teremana Tequila brand just got staked by Mast-Jägermeister! What will that mean? Through the new relationship, Mast-Jägermeister will assist in the Tequila’s international sales, marketing & logistics strategies, and bring organizational structure to Teremana’s international rollout. That will happen in the next few months, but Mast-Jägermeister will be there to help increase capacity, scale and distribution too. shorturl.at/inCNR

With the Canada/US border reopening - maybe it’s time for a trip! Quebec makes all kinds of great brews - but Cidrerie Lacroix sounds like it’s certainly worth the drive - if you like snowy adventures like snowshoeing, visiting the stables, checking out the food at Halte Gourmande, and - most especially - cider. 2/1/22 - Stout Month, Cannoli & Harpoon, NA Beer, Out of the Ashes #Harpoon #cannoli #boston #Stout #pastryStout #RealMenWearPink #AmericanCancerSociety #nabeer #quality #CaldorFire #OutoftheAshes

Well, Harpoon Brewery and Mike’s Pastry in Boston have teamed up once again. This time with two brews Harpoon Mike’s Pastry Cannoli Stout has an alcohol by volume, or ABV, of 7.3 percent. It’s made with real Mike’s Pastry cannoli shells in addition to a combination of cocoa nibs, lactose and vanilla to mimic the flavor of a famous Mike’s cannoli. “Barrel-Aged Mike’s Pastry Cannoli Stout” uses the same recipe, however Harpoon ages the liquid for months in premium rye whiskey barrels to add layers of vanilla, spice and caramel. As a result the aged stout has an ABV of 9 percent. For every case of beer sold in February, Harpoon will donate a portion of the proceeds to “Real Men Wear Pink,” an American Cancer Society-affiliated organization since next month is National Cancer Awareness Month. Anyone lucky enough to have bought a 4-pack of the regular or barrel-aged variety of the cannoli stout on location today received two Mike’s cannolis! https://www.masslive.com/food/2022/01/harpoon-brewery-and-mikes-pastry-of-boston-team-up-again-with-two-limited-release-cannoli-stout-flavors-plan-launch-event-in-february.html

Well Dry January is behind us - but it’s going to be different going forward as it has been for the past few years! Nonalcoholic beer had suffered a pretty bad rep in the United States for decades. But over the past few years a lot of independent craft brewers, have been more motivated to experiment with, and invest in, finding ways to make nonalcoholic beer that lives up to the standards of the brewers and the drinkers. Now I know I’ve talked about Zero Gravity’s Rescue Club and Athletic Brewing in the past, but let’s shine a light on some others. I have to run two Boston stories back to back, but I’m doing it - so grab a Dunky’s and jump into this story https://www.wbur.org/news/2022/01/21/dry-january-nonalcoholic-beer-trend

Sure, I slept on the Naples Winter Wine Fest - but I’m not sleeping on this one. The West Slope Foundation, along with wineries from Fair Play, and Creekside Cork and Brew host the Out of the Ashes Wine and Appetizer Pairing Fundraiser Saturday, Feb. 5 in Somerset California. Expect more than 15 local wineries pouring wines paired with appetizers and small bites prepared. This fundraising event will also feature live music, silent auction, live auction and more — with funds assisting Caldor Fire victims. Tickets will not be available at the door. https://www.mtdemocrat.com/prospecting/out-of-the-ashes-pairs-wine-food-and-fun/
