I mentioned the Naples Winter Wine Fest in passing last week- but looks like I should have been paying more attention. They raised over $20 million in auctions for the Naples Children & Education Foundation. About 600 auction attendees bid on 43 lots of wine, jewelry, luxury automobiles, international trips, and many other one-of-a-kind experiences. But, it’s not over - the auction continues until tomorrow, February 1st at https://nwwfonlineauction.com. NCEF will use the funds accumulated from this year’s event to award grants on March 14 to local organizations and fund strategic initiatives supporting local children in need. To get more info on the event and the lots auctioned - head to https://www.gulfshorebusiness.com/nwwf/

Congratulations to David Hiler, and Tim and Amy Brady, owners of Whetstone Brands (including Whetstone Craft Beers, Whetstone Station Brewery and Taproom, and River Garden Marketplace in Brattleboro, and Kampfires Campground, Inn & Entertainment in Dummerston). They were named by the Vermont Brattleboro Area Chamber of Commerce as “2021 Entrepreneurs of the Year” at the organization’s annual meeting, January 25. The award comes in as Whetstone Station Brewery (the trio’s first project together) is celebrating their 10th anniversary! Apparently, it stemmed from a chance meeting in 2011 that blossomed! Since I have had a taste of what they’ve become - I can’t wait to see how they continue to grow over the next ten years! https://vermontbiz.com/news/2022/january/30/whetstone-owners-named-bacc-entrepreneurs-year

And The Coca‑Cola Company and Molson Coors are expanding their relationship and the FAB (Flavored Alcoholic Beverage) category. Look for Simply Spiked Lemonade™ variety 12-packs to launch this summer. The duo will offer four refreshing flavors, made with real fruit juice; Lemonade, Strawberry Lemonade, Watermelon Lemonade, and Blueberry Lemonade. They’ll be canned in 12-oz. slims, with some available in single 24-oz. cans. The 12 ounces contain 170-calories and 5% ABV. https://www.coca-colacompany.com/news/simply-spiked-lemonade-announcement

There are a lot of great bourbons out in the world now, and there are some that are just… not that great. The problem is - it can get complicated to figure out where those affordable ones fall. Well, to help you navigate the affordable bourbon comes this list of bourbons between $10 - $20. Evan Williams, Old Tub, and Wild Turkey 101 topped this list of ten very affordable and very drinkable bottles of booze - whether you’re drinking it straight or using it for cocktails. Get the list and get ready to save some dollars at https://uproxx.com/life/best-bourbon-whiskey-under-20-ranked/

It’s finally happening. Anheuser-Busch is making a zero-carb beer. Bud Light Next. Now, if I recall correctly, I think had to have its name and slogan tweaked after a run-in with Yeungling - yes, and here’s the link https://breweriesinpa.com/yuengling-has-accused-bud-light-of-taking-its-trademark/ ). Anyway - it’s out now and the light beer comes in at 4%, zero carbs, and 30 fewer calories than Bud Light. AB has been working on this for ten years and went through 130 prototypes before landing on the bottles and cans that will be sold in six and 12 packs. Look for it on shelves February 7th https://nypost.com/2022/01/27/anheuser-busch-is-rolling-out-its-first-ever-zero-carb-beer/

And it’s beer fest time, but one of the many that’s shaking that up is all set to go! Beers With(out) Beards will be celebrating its 5th anniversary on Saturday, April 9th, 2022, at Brick South in Portland, ME to celebrate the achievements of women in craft beer. At the festival, you’ll be able to enjoy beer from thirty-five-plus breweries that are either women-owned or owned by femme-identifying people, or that have women or femme-identifying people in prominent leadership positions. Tickets went on sale this morning at https://hopculture.ticketsauce.com/e/beers-with-out-beards and for more info on the event go here https://www.hopculture.com/beers-without-beards-2022/

I just told you yesterday how the Detroit Free Press called 2022 the year of the lager and it’s looking like there might be some truth to lager having a moment this year. It’s a trend that's bucking the hazy-bois, adjuncts, and barrel-aged beers we’ve come to see regularly and present craft beer fans a crisp, clean, and apparently crushable beverage option. While they name-drop cult beers like Heady Topper, I’m not yet seeing people driving hundreds of miles to pick them up… yet. But - could we see that happen soon? Maybe. Or maybe people are just hungry for a great locally made beer that drinks well - wherever they are. Though people are now referring to them as crispy-bois https://vinepair.com/articles/lager-focused-breweries/

The frigid northeast temps are being avoided by some - but not by all. Including grapes! In fact, it seems a labor of love for the Lane Family in South Hero Vermont. Snow Farm Vineyard makes what are known as ice wine. It’s a unique wine that is made with grapes that are left on the vine -- usually until December as it needs cold temperatures. In fact, if it’s too warm the grapes will rot - so the colder the better! It’s also much sweeter than typical wine. For more on the story and this special wine - check out the link https://www.wcax.com/2022/01/21/vt-vineyard-uses-cold-temps-get-sweet-results/

1/26/22 - The Year of the Craft Lager, Rinks at breweries, Great Wine Values, Double IPAs ranked #Rink #skating #wine #value #DIPA #IPA #ranked

Wednesday January 26 2022 - and yesterday the Detroit Free Press called 2022 the year of the craft lager. We’ll see if they’re right.

Brought to you by The Real Voice - Mel Allen. Providing voice over for commercials, podcasts, explainer videos, eLearning, telephone systems, and more. Samples and demos at https://therealvoice.com

First - kudos to Four Quarters in Winooski, VT for turning their outdoor patio into a skating rink. It’s a great use of a space during the coldest months of the year in this area. You can check out the video of the outdoor skating area (complete with a fire pit) at https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=639426120845987&extid=CL-UNK-UNK-UNK-AN_GK0T-GK1C and check out 4Quarters at https://www.4qbc.com/

But - I found out - they’re not the only one doing it! Nope - there’s Fifty West Brewing https://fiftywestbrew.com/ice-skating/, Schram Haus Brewery http://schramhausbrewery.com/icerink/, and Throwback Brewery (whose was unfortunately damaged, but re-opening Friday) https://www.throwbackbrewery.com/blog/therink/ all have skating on site. Brewery Hockey leagues anyone?

When you re-rank all the new wines, it shakes things up a bit - and turns out you might be able to get a great value as a result of the new rankings from Wine Spectator. I’ve frequently gone back to some advice from a friend of mine that the best bottle of wines often only costs around $15 - $25 dollars. Sounds like that almost still holds true as The Top 10 Wine Values of 2021 rankings meet three criteria: They have rated 90 points or higher on Wine Spectator’s 100-point scale. They cost $40 or less and provide three other things - quality, price, and availability. They’re wines with solid track records that are good representatives of their regions. Get the rundown and put together your shopping list at https://www.mercurynews.com/2022/01/25/10-best-wine-values-from-wine-spectators-new-rankings/ I bet this will be talked about at the Naples Winter Wine Fest this weekend!

And this time of year is when IPAs are most popular - so let’s look at eight highly rated Double IPA’s and see how they rank when it’s a blind taste testing panel. Dirt Wolf and Florida man are the only two I haven’t tried yet, but by the rankings, there are no losers on this list. Even the 8th ranked Double IPA is described as a well-made beer that’s complex, flavorful, and easy to drink - and it seems to get better from there! However, it was a smashing success for Lawson’s Finest Liquids out of Waitsfield, Vermont as they took two top spots! At number 3 was Second Fiddle Double Fiddle, number 2 was Bell’s Hopslam and at number 1 was Lawson’s Finest Double Sunshine. https://uproxx.com/life/high-rated-double-ipas-blind-taste-tested-and-ranked/

1/25/22 The Boozebuddy Update Episode - Happy Irish Coffee Day, Light Cider, and US Grown Malts! #NationalIrishCoffeeDay #USAmade #lightcider #Local #Malt #cheapbeer #favorites

Tuesday, January 25, 2022 - Happy National Irish Coffee Day! I’ve got a little Irish in mine!

Brought to you by The Real Voice - Mel Allen. Providing voice over for commercials, podcasts, explainer videos, eLearning, telephone systems, and more. Samples and demos at https://therealvoice.com

Let’s tap some cheap beers. Every state has its favorite bargain beer and the folks at Eat This, Not That! put one together and I can find no fault with Vermont’s cheap beer - Natural Light. I recall too many times buying it by the case with friends and roommates because none of us could afford nice things. Thankfully my beer budget and tastes have advanced, but I look fondly back on those days with beer that had nearly no flavor, or ABV for that matter. Find out your state's choice (can’t say preferred choice for every state though) at the link. Oh, and just to make good on a promise to a friend of the show - I recently had Coors Banquet for the first time - in a bottle, and I’m not upset that I did, and would have it again. https://www.eatthis.com/most-popular-cheap-beer-every-state/

Your next whiskey might have ingredients that are a bit more local than in the past. Great Western Malting has launched two unique malted barley products - American Distillers High-Enzyme Malt and American Distillers Non-GN Malt. They were created or is that crafted, specifically for the distilling industry. Great Western Malting states that they maintain a close relationship with farmers in the Northwest US - specifically Idaho and Washington state. They are also happy to provide distillers with access to a domestic supply and production - which they state provides security in supply. After so many supply chain issues - I’ll definitely say this is a chain no one wants pinched! https://brewpublic.com/distilling/great-western-malting-launches-new-american-distillers-malts/

Light Cider seems to be working well - Citizen cider, Shacksbury, and Austin Eastciders have committed to it. Austin Eastciders, however, has launched 4 light cider flavors with real fruit, 100 calories, and 4.2% ABV. The flavors are Mango Mimosa, Cucumber Agave, Strawberry Lemonade, and Texas Brut. Texas Brut is a kind of “all-arounder” that they say you can use in place of champagne, even in cocktails and mixed drinks that call for the bubbly. Austin Eastciders, however, does still hold on to their higher ABV ciders like their 8% Imperial line-up. https://darik.news/texas/austin-eastsiders-launches-light-cider-line/202201482198.html

I get my hair cut pretty regularly, and I’ll be going to get it cut soon again and I’m definitely going to suggest this option to my barber - because I just learned there are barbershops that are also bars! In this story - it all started for a couple when they were getting the groomsmen some grooming for their wedding and they enjoyed a beer, bagels, and bourbon while getting prepped. Who knows - my state probably has some ridiculous law that doesn’t allow sharp objects and alcohol to be in the same establishment, but there are places that do! For the fairly short list, check out

https://www.winemag.com/2022/01/17/boozy-barbershop-bars/

Say what? Whistlepig, Vermont’s blended whiskey and farm to bottle whiskey maker, has launched an alcohol-free aged rye (a non-whiskey). It’s called Devil’s Slide and it’s aged six years from 100% rye. According to Meghan Ireland, Whiskey Blender at WhistlePig “Most non-alc ‘spirits’ start with water as a base, then add components to mimic the character and taste of a spirit, whereas the Devil’s Slide starts with 6-year old PiggyBack 100% rye,”. In addition, Whistlepig has also released Devil’s Half Send, a non-boozy rye that adds locally-sourced hemp extract and Full Send (which I presume packs a bigger punch) is coming soon Find out more about them at https://www.insidehook.com/article/booze/whistlepig-devils-slide-aged-booze-free-rye-review

Speaking of whiskies. 2021 was a great year for collectors - not just those looking to collect, but those selling their collections. And people paid some crazy money to get their hands on exclusive bottles. The cheapest on this list of the top 20 came in at $21,000 for Michter’s 25-year-old Straight Rye. At the middle of the pack were two bottles of Macallan 72 year old for about $80,000 and the top bottle of booze? Macallan Fine & Rare 60-year-old, 1926 that sold for just under $1.5 million! I can’t hold onto a bottle longer than a few months, so I don’t know how y’all do it! I can’t think it’s a great way to invest though - seems as sketchy as bitcoin - but get the full run down and make your own decisions on it at https://www.whiskyadvocate.com/revealed-auction-houses-most-expensive-whiskies-of-2021/

Lawson’s Finest Liquids, located in the Mad River Valley area of Vermont, has expanded distribution of Hopzilla Double IPA *outside of Vermont* for the first time ever! You can now find the brew in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and (of course) still in Vermont. The beer has Simcoe, El Dorado, and Cascade hops. It comes in at 8.7% ABV and should reach everywhere inside the above states through the end of February. It’s the first specialty brew of 2022 for Lawson’s out of Waitsfield, VT - and one that they’re asked about all the time in the taproom. Find out where you can get it here https://www.lawsonsfinest.com/where-to-buy/ and read the story here https://vermontbiz.com/news/2022/january/22/lawson%E2%80%99s-finest-liquids-unleashes-hopzilla

If you had Cognac coming in for a W in 2021 - you weren’t alone, because people everywhere (literally worldwide) were buying up the stuff. Sales of Cognac went up by 31% in 2021. In the US alone, sales jumped by 11%, China had the biggest jump with sales in that country jumping by more than 56%! Part of the increase is being attributed to a five-year suspension on tariffs that the US and European Union agree to last year. Cognac and its fans are celebrating a real recovery in the industry as a result! https://cheersonline.com/2022/01/19/cognac-sales-climbed-31-in-2021/

In a move that’s obviously a response to the craft Beer’s #MeToo moment, The Mass Brewers Guild has partnered with Speakfully, an anonymous third-party reporting system. The platform provides employees a safe and anonymous way to report toxic work culture, harassment, or give general feedback about their overall workplace. It also gives employers real-time data and analytics to promote proactive action. Employees and Employers can communicate privately through Speakfully’s secure messaging portal - protecting people’s identities. The program is an opt-in for members of the guild and is one of many offerings including additional employee law and HR education, as well as bystander and de-escalation training for staff. Speakfully was founded as a direct result of inappropriate workplace interactions experienced by CEO and co-founder, Jana Morrin. What started as a simple documentation process led to the larger idea that employees need a private and secure platform to voice concerns without fear of retribution. Marcus Camby former basketball great toasted his strategic partnership with the White Lion Brewing Company on Thursday beside himself - with a glass of Marcus Camby New England India Pale Ale. The Basketball Hall of Fame also collaborated with the release. Camby, who went from the UMass Minutemen to 17 seasons with the NBA, was joined by White Lion founder Ray Berry for the announcement at the brewery’s taproom in downtown Springfield. The no- and low-alcohol beverage industry is currently valued just shy of $10 billion USD across 10 different key global markets according to IWSR, a beverage market and data analysis firm. It’s on target to continue growing through 2025. In 2021, no- and low-alcohol beer, cider, spirits, wine, and ready-to-drink products expanded to hold 3.5 percent of the volume share of the entire beverage alcohol industry. No- and low-alcohol beer and cider is the largest sector of this industry. Non-alcoholic RTDs and spirits each are projected to see growth, along with non-alcoholic wines growing at a bit of a lower percentage. Low-alcohol wines are the only sector predicted to outperform their alcohol-free counterpart! https://vinepair.com/booze-news/non-alcoholic-industry-value/

And speaking of RTD’s Bota Box is now in the ready-to-drink (RTD) category with the launch of Bota’Rita pre-mixed margarita wine cocktails. Bota’Rita Margarita RTDs launch at retail in March of 2022 with two flavors, Classic Lime and Strawberry. These are made using Bota Box, blended with real agave, lime juice, and natural flavors. According to the executive vice president of marketing for Delicato Family Wines, “Pre-mixed margaritas have become incredibly popular with consumers and are largely driving the growth of the pre-mixed cocktail category, which is one of the fastest-growing segments in the U.S. beverage alcohol industry”. If that’s not enough each 1.5-liter carton of Bota’Rita generates 88% fewer greenhouse gasses to produce compared to the equivalent amount of liquid in glass bottles, the company reports and is made from post-consumer, 100%-recyclable cardboard fiber, printed with non-toxic ink and glued with cornstarch instead of synthetic glue. https://cheersonline.com/2022/01/18/bota-box-botarita-rtds/

1/19/22 - #celebrities #JoelMcHale #CHO #qmixers #Drake #BobDylan #Bourbon #whiskey #winners #ZeroGravity #VT #vtcraftbeer #7daysvt

Brought to you by The Real Voice - Mel Allen. Providing voice over for commercials, podcasts, explainer videos, eLearning, telephone systems, and more. Samples and demos at https://therealvoice.com

Our first celebrity is the story about Chief Happy Hour Officer Joel McHale (probably best known for his role in Community) - and I didn’t know a CHO was a thing until I read this story, but I’d like to become one - is now slinging drinks for Q mixers. They have a playbook with conversation starters and recipes you can make with, surprise, their line of mixers. Honestly - just seems like a good bit of fun and I’m here for it. You can download the digital booklet and find out Joe’s signature drink recipe for the “Five O’clock Fizz” at https://qmixers.com/joel-mchale-cho/

Our next celery is, well a group of celebrities: Drake’s Virginia Black Decadent American Whiskey, Bob Dylan’s Heaven’s Door Redbreast Edition, Matthew McConaughey’s Longbranch, Scottie Pippen’s DIGITS Bourbon, and Terry Bradshaw’s Bradshaw Bourbon. Between the beverages, there seems to be a clear winner and a clear… not winner. I mean they’re all celebrities, there really aren’t any losers in the bunch - but some beverages should maybe go through a rebrand or remix, or just fade away (sorry Drake fans). For the full tasting notes and the four you should consider purchasing head to the link https://uproxx.com/life/best-celebrity-bourbon-brands-tasted-and-ranked/

And finally for the fusion I mentioned - Burlington Vermont’s Zero Gravity had a presence in the space next to it - but has now officially expanded into and taken over the space formerly occupied by the Great Northern Restaurant. It’s now a spacious beer hall with some cozy spaces, a pool table, and more. The counter-service menu is exactly the same, whether you order at the former taproom bar or at the grand antique bar on the restaurant side of the building. A wall has been removed so people can also flow between the spaces. The menu and beverages have shifted, but they still seem to offer some good choices for take-out and dine-in service. 1/18/22 - #beerfest #GABF #BarrelandFlow #Savor #Bourbon #Scotch #Whiskey Wine #doingitwrong

Brought to you by The Real Voice - Mel Allen. Providing voice over for commercials, podcasts, explainer videos, eLearning, telephone systems, and more. Samples and demos at https://therealvoice.com

One of the things I love about January is that we start hearing about the upcoming festivals and this year is no different. GABF, Savor, and more are all on the calendars. I just saw the info on Barrel & Flow https://www.barrelandflow.com/, set for August 12 -14 and it looks like it’s going to be an even bigger event than last year. It was voted by USA Today readers as one of Americas favorite festivals. Sadly - I couldn’t find a single resource where you could find all or most of the beer fests. Two certainly stood out. One is Google and when I searched for “Beer Fest for 2022” which covered everything local to me. I got this link https://tinyurl.com/ycx9xa9t and then I found this one at “Music Festival Wizard” isn’t bad, but definitely is missing several https://www.musicfestivalwizard.com/festival-type/beer-festivals/ If you know of a better link - head to https:BoozebuddyUpdate.com and comment in today’s post.

What do Whisky, Scotch and Bourbon all have in common? They’re incredibly popular, seem to be the be victims of counterfeiters, and age for several years. Well - that last one may no longer be true as Dolf Stockhausen is in the news again. I first saw this story in March of 2021 as he was pushing through the “Finishing process” with light to get the same characteristics out of spirits that have only matured for 7 days, instead of 7 - 12 years For the older story https://cnalifestyle.channelnewsasia.com/experiences/whiskies-that-are-instantly-aged-rapid-maturation-251691 and you can read the newer story with a subscription at https://www.businesspost.ie/business/meet-dolf-stockhausen-the-entrepreneur-who-says-he-can-mature-whiskey-in-a-week-and-wants-to-do-it-in-ireland-0951d922

And apparently we’re all doing it wrong - ordering and drinking wine that is. According to a new survey conducted by OnePoll on behalf of Woodbridge Wines, and published at Martha Stewart’s site, only 17 percent of wine drinkers swirl and sniff the beverage before drinking it. It seems Martha’s here for us - whether you do or don’t want to skip all the wine etiquette. At home, it’s always ok, but what about when you’re at a place that will give you a proper presentation and then expects you to sniff, swirl and sip a sample to make sure it’s up to snuff - else they turn up their noses at you and your table? Get the info on the survey, find out what you may have been missing and decide if it’s worth it to you! https://www.marthastewart.com/8207673/most-wine-drinkers-dont-follow-proper-etiquette-survey-2022

Well that didn’t take long, A new program meant to rescue plastic can carriers, has already collected over 10,000 of the beer hauling plastic holders, handles, or toppers! The program launched in November with the collaboration of a wade systems operator, Reusable solutions, and Eco Friendly Beer, over a dozen breweries, cideries, and eco-conscious consumers! And to think - I haven’t even dropped mine off yet! The program saves not only on the funds and cost to manufacture and transport the plastic - but provides a much-needed commodity for craft beverage makers, and created a recycling stream for ones that can be washed and reused. I hope this means the Vermont Can Carrier Reuse & Recycle Initiative can grow https://www.brewbound.com/news/vermont-reuse-recycle-initiative-rescues-10000-plastic-can-carriers-in-first-2-months

Dry January, for some, doesn’t mean taking the month off from anything - and there are several THC and CBD beverage “enhancers” that are answering the call for those looking for options. Dry January, by the way, not as new as some think - apparently dating back to the 1940s. So apparently it’s from “the Good ole days” we always hear about, though it really started gaining steam in the states about 11 years back. The good thing is that alcohol-free beer, seltzers, coffee and drink starters with CBD or THC are all available (in some areas), and it won't cost much more than a liquor-store run. Lagunitas, Dixie Elixirs, and Ripple are some names that might be new to you - but maybe you’d like an introduction. Check out the link to greet these new beverages just waiting for you! https://www.westword.com/marijuana/dry-january-marijuana-beverage-alternatives-13206677

Now we’ve all made some good putts - some of my best have been made at a now-defunct mini-golf course, some are made in the office and one man made a 96-foot putt at a University of Louisville men’s basketball game recently to win a bottle of 23-year-old Pappy Van Winkle with “Putt for Pappy”. Kevin Burch - I tip my hat to you - and if you’d like someone to share it with - call me. Your coolest new place to drink might be a bookstore. While bookstore bars have usually been bookstores first with OK coffee, and both wine and snacks from a box - things are changing. Bookstore bars are now as much a bar as they are a bookstore and are looking to build a sense of community over a great read. They are a better place to bring a date, and you can read a good book while sipping a glass of wine in a big comfy chair. It turns out that the businesses help each other, not only in creativity but in revenue - when your book sales are low, the bar can keep the business afloat and vice versa. What’s not to love? Check out some highlights in this article on the subject https://www.eater.com/22882395/bar-bookstore-cafe-trend-natural-wine-coffee-menu

Monster Beverage Corporation is now going to be a Brewing powerhouse after acquiring the CANarchy Brewery Collective - adding craft beer and hard seltzer to their company. The transaction includes the Cigar City, Oskar Blues, Deep Ellum, Perrin Brewing, Squatters, and Wasatch brands. Barring any regulatory staling, the sale should be completed by the end of the First Quarter of 2022. https://finance.yahoo.com/news/monster-beverage-corporation-acquire-canarchy-130500240.html

And is it a case of Willy Wonka, or a copycat of BrewDog’s recent gold can contest? Well, either way, someone’s going to Live Like a King! Wednesday January 12 2022

Some big changes in beer - Salt Lake City’s Uinta Brewing has been purchased by a joint venture that combines importer/sales and marketing company US Beverage with Colorado-based private investment firm FC Crestone. And Molson Coors Beverage Company announced it will sell two brick-and-mortar locations that formerly housed San Diego’s Saint Archer Brewing Company to Ballast Point owners Kings & Convicts Brewing Company, which says it will keep current staff and designate the Miramar, California facility as the new operating headquarters for Kings & Convicts. Unity has been on a decline since 2017 and Saint Archer’s sales had been growing rapidly, until last year… https://www.goodbeerhunting.com/sightlines/2022/1/10/owners-shed-saint-archer-uinta-amid-impatience-with-slow-craft-market

White Oak is the go to wood for barrels, unfortunately it looks like the supply is being cut and processed faster than the trees can be grown to replenish the wood. Thankfully The White Oak Initiative has a collection of partners from academic, government and the private sector working to increase the sustainability long term. The White Oak industry is worth a reported $8.6 Billion in Kentucky alone - and it is used for furniture and flooring as well. https://www.foodandwine.com/news/american-white-oak-wine-whiskey-cask-sustainability

And a story with a local flair - to me - in Charlotte (not Charlotte) Vermont malts are being roasted and many New England breweries are reaping the benefits of fresh and local malts. Vermont Malthouse has been putting out about 45 tons of malt per month and is making upgrades that would up that potential output to 75 tons per week. Eventually, they expect they could handle 150 tons a week. As they’re trying to use all Vermont grown grains - that means they’ll need about 2,000 acres to support that. It’s good news for a state that’s been losing dairy farmland. For the full story https://www.wcax.com/2022/01/10/mivt-vermont-malthouse/ and check out the malts at https://vermontmalthouse.com

Brought to you by The Real Voice - Mel Allen. Providing voice over for commercials, podcasts, explainer videos, eLearning, telephone systems, and more. Samples and demos at https://therealvoice.com

OK, yesterday we talked about beers that might be criminally bad - today let’s talk about some that are underrated. Very underrated and that doesn’t mean rare or expensive. These are either underappreciated beers and some, like Coors Banquet, have been around for some time. Amazingly - it’s a beer I don’t think I’ve ever had. Time to change that and pick up some others I haven’t imbibed with like Telluride Face Down Brown and Samuel Smith’s Taddy Porter. Several of the others I have had and can say, I would definitely have again. Check out the full list https://uproxx.com/life/the-most-underrated-beers-ever-according-to-experts/

Beer appliances come and go - but one company hopes there’s hits a sweet spot. Some are overcomplicated, have a complicated system that means you can’t customize your brews, but the BEERMKR says theirs is an all-in-one automated craft beer-making device that anybody can use. Add whatever ingredients you want (like chocolate or coffee), customize the kits they offer or build kits that are entirely yours. It will make the equivalent of a 12 pack and set you back about $650, but that’s certainly a bargain compared to some beer-making setups. https://beermkr.com/products/beermkr-system

And Katy Perry launched De Soi, a line of sparkling ready-to-drink non-alcoholic beverages on January 6th. The 37-year-old explains that she can’t drink like she’s in her 20’s anymore and, well who can’t identify with that! De Soi, which Perry explains is French for "pleasure with restraint," is available to purchase in either ready-to-drink cans or bottles. Perry and the co-creator/co-founder - Master Distiller Morgan McLachlan - created the three flavors: Golden Hour, Champignon Dreams, and Purple Lune

19 Crimes Martha’s Chard is the brand’s first California chardonnay. Martha reportedly worked closely with the team at 19 Crimes and created a wine “that breaks preconceived notions of California chardonnay” and they said it’s “approachable and simultaneously as bold as her personality”. 19 Crimes Martha’s Chard will be available in California in early January and distributed nationally on Feb. 1, with a suggested retail price of $11.99 https://cheersonline.com/2022/01/06/19-crimes-launches-martha-stewart-chardonnay

And speaking of crimes - when it comes to beer - we’ve all made some poor choices. I remember when I was young, fairly broke, and the choice was made for me in the store - where I shopped for the cheapest beer in the biggest package. So - yeah - I picked some bottom of the barrel beers - which may or may not be on this list. OK, several of them are on this list of the worst beers in the world! Might be a coincidence but most of these beers are made in the US… https://www.eatthis.com/news-worst-beers-in-the-world/

Now if you want to experiment with making some good beer - then you should know what a Foeder is (hint - it’s pronounced food-er). And it’s a large oak barrel - can be horizontal or vertical - where you can age or ferment beer - whether it’s wild, sour or not. They’re used to make styles like Lambics, Flanders Red and even brown ales. So why use one - well, they’re larger than you think. Usually they start at 3x larger than a typical wine or beer barrel, but can really be as big as you need - which means they can actually save space & time in breweries. If you want to find out more about Foeders, check out the link https://www.hopculture.com/foeders/

Some beers to put on your list for the upcoming beer can appreciation day on January 24th (it’s good to plan early, right?) Well - how about you choose some of them? That’s exactly what’s happening at Stone Brewing Each year, craft breweries across the nation roll out new limited-release beers to entice beer drinkers through the seasons, but few make fans happy by bringing back tried and true brews. Stone Brewing has announced its lineup of fan favorites, voted on by loyals. Righteous Black IPA would be the standout on that list for me - but I’ve always loved black IPAs. https://mybeerbuzz.blogspot.com/2022/01/stone-brewing-looks-to-fan-votes-for.html

Sierra Nevada Brewing enters the market with a new hop-centric beverage that’s 100% free of alcohol, calories, carbs, and sugar. Hop Splash Sparkling Hop-Infused Water is Sierra Nevada’s take on the growing hop water trend that’s now about 3 years old. They start off with the “high-quality H20” that’s in their beer. The beverage in 6-packs of 12oz cans can be pre-ordered to be shipped to your door across the United States. There’s even a recurring subscription option! https://shop.sierranevada.com/products/hop-splash-sparkling-hop-infused-water-12-pack

Let’s wade into some whiskeys! ICYMI - Fred Minnick put out his list of the top Whiskeys of 2021. The list of 100encompasses all types of American whiskey: Blends of Straights, Ryes, Bourbons, Single Malts, etc. I like that he admits it’s subjective and you may not rank them the same way he did. He stands behind his top 15 though, as those were discernibly different enough to stand well above the rest. Most of the list was released on December 30th and he live-streamed the top ten to select his #1. When asked “Why did it take so long?” He said, “My team and I put our heart and soul into the Kentucky Bourbon Benefit. I am glad we did, because we raised more than $3.4 million for tornado victims. But that is why we are completing this list in January” which sounds like a damn good reason https://www.fredminnick.com/2021/12/30/best-american-whiskeys-of-2021/

Corona brewer Constellation Brands and Coca-Cola are teaming up to launch Fresca Mixed, a spirit-based cocktail, later this year. Fresca is the second non-alcoholic drink owned by Coke to be turned into a spiked version. The first was Topo Chico. Fresca Mixed appears to be based on the sparkling citrus soda water (not the soft drink) as it has zero calories and no sugar - often used as a cocktail mixer - so they say it’s an optimal choice as an RTD. No word on how many flavors will be released or an exact release date yet https://www.cnbc.com/2022/01/06/coca-cola-and-constellation-brands-team-up-to-create-alcoholic-fresca-cocktails.html

And what are people drinking across the land of milk and honey - well apparently beer. But with thousands of craft beer companies scattered across the states, what should you be drinking? Porch Drinking tries to answer that with their list of select micro-breweries from each state. They don’t claim it’s a ‘Best of’ (which is a relief) https://www.porchdrinking.com/articles/2021/12/31/craft-beer-across-america-50-beers-from-50-states/

And if you’re a wine drinker, but looking for an alcohol-free option for Dry January - or just the occasional beverage without alcohol - then a list of Rosés might be for you. Most of the bottles recommended are $20 - so not cheap. But they also give you options that are acceptable and some to steer clear of! https://www.nytimes.com/2021/12/20/dining/drinks/nonalcoholic-sparkling-roses.html

The Best German Beer in the world? OK - I’ll bite.. or rather drink. According to a panel of beer experts that list includes several tasty options. I will agree with a statement made by the founder of Wynwood Brewing Co. in Miami. He likes Oktoberfest beer, regardless of the season. So do I. So no surprise Marzen made the list - but then again no surprise Hefeweisen, Helles, and Pilsners did either. Get the rundown and reasons for the inclusion of the specific beers at https://uproxx.com/life/craft-beer-experts-tell-us-their-go-to-german-beers-for-all-seasons/

I love a good #CollaBEERation and there’s one coming in from Weldwerks, Our Mutual Friend, and Firestone Walker. Weldwerks and Our Mutual Friend have been teaming up for some time, for some West Coast IPA goodness… but now all three are teaming up with “Knock the Froth Off” which is Australian for “drinking beer”. It will be available in 16-ounce cans and on draft - check the link on how, where, and when. https://www.brewbound.com/news/weldwerks-brewing-our-mutual-friend-brewing-and-firestone-walker-team-up-on-collaboration-ipa

And you can’t just go out in January where I am without a little preparation and gear. So it goes for those venturing into Dry January, at least that’s the hope of Hairless Dog Brewing who has come out with Dry January Survival Kits. The kits include a choice of the three Hairless Dog 0% ABV craft NA beer varieties and merchandise like beanie, koozies, hats, tees, and more. The kits can be yours starting around $20 and up to about $45 at HDBrewing.com

Is Dry January healthy? Science and medicine say any cutting back on alcohol is a good thing and, ultimately how much you do is on you. Some will cut out all alcohol intake - period - though some say if you are a heavy drinker, you might have better health results by tapering off your intake. Some pledge to only have one glass of wine with food, others will cut back considerably with the aim of resetting their relationship with alcohol. For more on why you should do it, and some ways to improve your health check out the link https://nypost.com/2022/01/02/does-dry-january-actually-improve-your-health-2/

PBR went on a weird Twitter rant yesterday. They definitely had some… opinions on Dry January and what you could do with it. It sounds like someone had a bad day and just before yesterday’s podcast was out someone started deleting tweets. However, the employee in question may have been foretelling their own future as it sounds like they are out of a job and eating ass now. You know how the internet works and once you put something out there - it’s going to be saved and shared forever! Check out some of the questionable decisions made at the link https://brobible.com/culture/article/pabst-blue-ribbon-twitter-viral-profane-tweet-dry-january/

And Troy Aikman has announced a New Brand: EIGHT, a Light Lager Brewed With Organic Grains. For some reason, the article claimed: “Troy Aikman Takes on Big Beer” but this sounds like another celebrity booze company - which has become as popular as ‘your mom’ jokes when I was a kid. I don’t think Troy intends to stop any of the big beer brands and probably has an exit plan of selling off his brand once he gets it big - but maybe he’s in it for the long haul. The beer has 90 calories, 2.6g carbohydrates, 4% ABV and the 12-ounce cans will come in 6 and 12 packs, with 19.2-ounce single cans. It’s expected to come out in March and has a mission to give 1% back to Texas. https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20220103005503/en/Troy-Aikman-Takes-on-Big-Beer-With-Announcement-of-New-Brand-EIGHT-an-Elite-Light-Lager-Brewed-With-Organic-Grains

A dry-hopping experiment that might surprise you, because someone decided to spend $27 in hops, $9 in shipping and a whopping $12 in bud light to see what the effects of dry-hopping would be. The person running the experiment found that of the 14 hop varieties tested, they preferred El Dorado, Citra, Strata, Azacca, and Eclipse - and had some they didn’t enjoy as much - but directed everyone to try it out themselves and see what ones you like https://hazyandhoppy.com/dry-hopping-bud-light-the-hop-tasting-experiment/ and you can buy a sampler pack of hops here https://amzn.to/3qHW1dT

A whiskey review? Yeah, and this one’s interesting It’s called Roadstock. The Whistlepig Rye Whiskey was sent on a ride all the way from Shoreham, Vermont to Los Angeles, California – and back. Before leaving half was poured in Bordeaux-blend oak casks from Jordan Winery, The other half remained in new oak for the trip. Once the halfway point was reached, the whiskey in new oak went into barrels that had held Firestone Walker Brewery’s Imperial Stout, Imperial Blonde Ale, and Experimental Ale. When they returned - it was all blended back together. Check out the rest of the story and review in full at https://thewhiskeywash.com/reviews/whistlepig-roadstock-rye/

A non-alcoholic beer for those exploring Dry January. How about Four! Brooklyn Brewery's New Special Effects Non-Alcoholic Beer Lineup includes a Pilsner, IPA, Hazy IPA, and Hoppy Amber. It’s been a great line for Brooklyn Brewery too as the Special Effects brand now makes up more than 10% of their total sales. https://www.pastemagazine.com/drink/craft-beer/brooklyn-brewery-special-effects-review-non-alcoholic-variety-pack-pilsner-hazy-ipa/
